The 3D Secure system is an online payment security system, created by the international issuers Visa and MasterCard and implemented in France in 2008. It is a cardholder authentication procedure, to ensure that it is the cardholder who is making the payment on the internet.
Securing bank card payments with 3D Secure
When the "Verified by Visa", "Visa Secure", "CB Paiement Sécurisé", "MasterCard SecureCode" or "MasterCard Identify Check" logos are displayed on the e-retailer's websites, the payment is made in two steps.
Step 1: Entering banking information
As with any transaction on a merchant site, in the order payment area, you must enter:
– your card number,
– its validity date,
– the visual cryptogram (3 digits on the back of the card).
Step 2: Authenticating the transaction
A new window then opens, with your bank's logo. It redirects you to your bank's website to confirm your identity, with the authentication process set up by it. According to the most common procedure, your bank sends you a single-use code by SMS. You enter the requested information in the entry screen. When the authentication is confirmed by your bank, the payment is authorized and the transaction is finalized.
